It is also a prerequisite for teaching jobs in central government schools like Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and many private schools.
Exam Structure
- Paper I: For candidates who intend to teach Classes I to V (Primary Level).
- Paper II: For candidates who intend to teach Classes VI to VIII (Elementary Level).
Candidates can appear for both papers if they wish to be eligible for teaching across both levels.
Eligibility Criteria
- For Paper I: Candidates should have passed or be appearing in the final year of a Diploma in Elementary Education or equivalent.
- For Paper II: Candidates should have a degree (B.A., B.Sc., etc.) and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) qualification or equivalent.
Syllabus
- Paper I: Child development and pedagogy, languages (Language I and II), mathematics, and environmental studies.
- Paper II: Child development and pedagogy, languages, and subjects related to the candidate's specialization (e.g., mathematics/science or social studies).
Marking Scheme
Each paper has 150 multiple-choice questions (MCQs), with 1 mark for each correct answer. There is no negative marking.
Certification
Candidates scoring 60% or more in the CTET are issued a CTET certificate, which is now valid for a lifetime. This certificate is essential to apply for teaching positions in central schools and other schools that recognize CTET.
Importance
CTET is widely regarded as a minimum qualification for a teaching career in India. It helps maintain teaching quality and ensures teachers meet a standardized level of competency.
The CTET is conducted twice a year, typically in online (computer-based) mode. Aspiring teachers can find notifications and updates on the official CBSE CTET website.
